Belize is quite fortunate to enjoy the protection of the World’s second largest barrier reef system. Due to the protection of the reef, the waters off of our coast are generally shallow and calm for quite a way out. As we don’t experience strong wave action, seagrass has a chance to take root. For this reason, you’ll find the sea beds of Ambergris Caye to be predominantly grassy.
It’s important to keep in mind that this seagrass is an important part of Belize’s ecosystem, and the removal of seagrass is highly controversial and legislated due to its importance to the health of the barrier reef.
What this all means is that Sapphire’s beach does not have a traditional walk in beach you may see in other destinations. Nevertheless, we are proud to showcase one of the best beaches on Ambergris Caye.
Coastal areas of the southern USA, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean intermittently experience periods of sargassum seaweed washing ashore throughout the year. Our staff works diligently to keep our area clear however, guests should be aware when visiting coastal areas that seaweed may be present.
